Entry #9: Topics in Food Quest
So, moving from general to specific, the purpose of these illustrations is to show viewers a daily routine of their fast lunches in a kind of comic wrapper. Firstly, to catch attention the pictures use a Pop art style, which isn't as famous right now as it was some time ago, so, according to the rule "Everything new is good forgotten old", this design looks fresh and easily takes on itself the bored people eyes by the colorful palette and charming simplified line-art. The reference in this design is partially connected with the second reason, but anyway, the picture with the robot had a reference to the world-famous phrase from "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, but here the question is surely not about some high meanings as death and life, more like just about the regular bargaining with conscience on the theme "Should I let myself today eat some junk food, or not?". Adding to the talk about references above, but slowly moving to the second reason why these pictures are here, to the humor. The whole mode of illustrations looks unserious and maybe doesn't make anyone laugh, but that could create a little - tiny grin on viewers' faces.
Dotting the i's, this design is pretty relevant, because that makes the purpose to make some fun of common human lunches, and successfully performs that purpose by masterfully using specific design solutions and humor.
I love the pop art style, so I am glad that you found some cartoons that reflect that! These are interesting and I especially like your take on the second cartoon. The Hamlet quote directed towards the junk food is interesting as we know it is self destructive, yet we continue to indulge.
